I love gardens, really I do. I love the seasonal change. I love daffodils in the Spring, grasses blowing in the breeze, the warm hues of Autumn, and birds foraging in the winter landscape. I want to enjoy every day of every season.
However, there are a few things I'm less fond of. Weeds growing in the middle of a perennial that I now have to dislodge, deer eating the buds off of my perennials before they can bloom, and Japanese Beetles enjoying my garden more than I am. Call me crazy but those things can drive me a little, crazy.
As I have struggled through my mid-life crisis (so-to-speak) as a landscape designer I've come to the conclusion that I want my gardens to work for me, not put me to work. After a quarter century at this I know how to nuke a pest, pull a weed and tame a landscape. I'd just rather not. So I simply choose the native shrub that doesn't need to be sprayed, bushes that mature to the size I want them, and perennials that combine so effortlessly I can just set back, relax and enjoy them.
It really isn't about 'no' maintenance, it's about 'knowing' maintenance. If you want a landscape that works for you then put me to work designing your next project.
