Nail fungus, or onychomycosis, is very common on the toenails. It presents as thicken yellowed, brown or white nails. This nail condition can be caused by a fungus, mold, yeast or a combination. The thickening of the nail can cause pain or discomfort to the surrounding tissue, especially when walking. The nail material can become soft and crumbly at times.
The nail condition can occur due to trauma to the nail or surrounding skin that allows the fungus, yeast or mold enter under the nail, or at the base of the nail. The condition is often seen with tinea (atheletes foot) or fungal infection of the skin. The nail condition can involved the entire nail, or a portion of the nail.
