Plymouth Township was laid out by William Penn on May 5, 1686. The first settlers were members of the "Society of Friends", or Quakers, who came from Devonshire, England in the ship "Desire" which arrived at Philadelphia on June 23, 1686. The name "Plymouth" comes from the town of Plymouth in Devonshire, England.
