The first and second graders have been thrilled to watch as their silkworm caterpillars spin cocoons. After several weeks, thousands of mulberry leaves, and tender care, the silkworms were beginning their transformation into a moth. We have been carefully observing the caterpillars as they spin and recording both words and pictures in our Observation Journals. The cocoons are especially interesting when they are first being formed. We are able to observe the caterpillars as they attach silk to the walls, begin to spin a layer of silk around them, and move around as they strengthen and thicken the cocoon walls.
The students count the cocoons each morning, determine how many new cocoons formed overnight, and enter the data into a class chart. This morning we had 54 cocoons, nine more than yesterday. We will continue to collect data and will be analyzing and graphing our results.
The class has also been reading about silk farms and how the cocoons are transformed into silk for cloth. The class is very impressed that a silkworm cocoon can unravel into a single strand as long as a mile. Many children are very sad to learn that most silkworm pupas are killed in the cocoon in order to preserve the long strand of silk.

First and second grade students continue their study of monarch butterflies. They have witnessed and recorded the life cycle of the monarch - from egg to caterpillar, to chrysalis, to butterfly - in their classrooms, and have released their butterflies. This week the students focused on Mexico's Dia de los Muertos. They learned about the Mexican belief that each monarch butterfly that arrives in Mexico represents the spirit of a loved one. After reading books about the traditions around the Day of the Dead, students decorated sugar skulls and made paper marigolds for their celebration. They read about pan de los muertos (Bread of the Dead) and two students chose to research the bread and bake it at home to share with their classmates. Students then shared what they learned with the school community.

Fifth and sixth grade students dazzled the school community this morning with their production of "Pirates of Grammar Island." The auditorium was packed and we all listened to our favorite pirates sing and dance about declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences, synonyms and antonyms, capitalization, punctuation, adverbs, adjectives, and pronouns -- and we were very entertained! Students choreographed the show and created the scenery in
art class in the style of pop artist, Jasper Johns. What a performance!

Alumni, teachers, Meeting members, students, parents, and alumni parents, and other friends of LFS gathered together to celebrate Lansdowne Friends School on Sunday, October, 24th at Homecoming 2010. On a beautiful fall day visitors were treated to the first screening of the new LFS DVD, enjoyed lunch and conversation, toured the classrooms and campus, made apple butter with Tr. Deb and puppets with Tr. Al, and helped Tr. Susan celebrate her birthday! What a glorious day.

What is Gia doing?
You CAN try this at home to figure out how sound travels. Tie about two feet of string to each end of a
coat hanger (the hook should point down.) Wrap the opposite ends of each piece
of string around each index finger. Bend
over and gently swing the hanger so the hook taps against a table or
chair. Listen for the sound it

The Lansdowne Friends School community gathered in the Meeting House this afternoon to welcome and thank representatives from First Niagara Bank. Jeff Merrill and Lori Deckman presented Head of School, Susan Stone, with a check from First Niagara Bank for $10,000.00. This generous contribution, made possible through Pennsylvania's EITC program, helps Lansdowne Friends School provide tuition aid to families with need. After a loud round of applause, students sang "We Come From the Mountain" for our generous visitors. Thank you, First Niagara.

As part of their study of the Lenni Lenape, third and fourth grade students are investigating Native American artifacts on loan from the University of Pennsylvania's Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in their classroom! Here Miles takes a look at a leather story-teller pouch. Other items examined so far ... an axe head, birch bark,a turkey caller, part of a ceremonial headdress, and a mortar and pestle. More to come!

Kindergarten students have been investigating, "Community". As part of their study students walked
to the Lansdowne public Library on October 4th. Today at Gathering students shared their favorite part of that experience with the rest of the school.
"This is Miss Rachee reading a Grover book." Simon "

"This is me walking across the bridge. We saw the train tracks." Christian
"This is me popping bubbles on the computer." Leroy

Inspired by Copy Cat books read in class, first and second grade students figured out the organizational structure used by the author and then created their own stories.
"If I were a unicorn instead of a cat I would have a big horn that sparkled in the sun. I would play with the other unicorns and if a dragon came, I would quickly turn back into a cat again." Brie, first grade
"If I were a phoenix instead of a cat, I would glide through the air on a single wing. I would learn many tricks. I would roast bacon with my breath. I would go and be free, and if an army ever came, I would quickly turn back into a cat again." Lucas, second grade
