Just so you know, it’s not possible for your team to read your mind — especially the first time they ever work with you.
As silly as that phrase sounds and as much as it might make you laugh, I have even caught myself on occasion expecting my team to do that very thing. We often have much more on our plate than is humanly possible as an entrepreneur and we have so many experiences and information that we’ve gathered from all the events we’ve attended and people that we spoke to, that we may just think that everyone knows what to do when it comes to how often to send out emails, or how many tweets a day, or what color you want your background of your website page to be.
Being specific when you’re first working with your team about what you want saves hours of frustration and cost, and it helps your team to get to know what you want.
I’ve found, working with an overseas team especially, that if you state the preferences you have on certain areas they will continue to meet your expectations. For example, if you want them to email you back within 24 hours of when you email them to let you know that they started on a project or give you an update, it’s important that you let them know that. Not every person is aware of what you prefer and some may give you updates constantly and others may not unless you ask. Don’t get frustrated and feel that “this person is just not working out”.
Team members will often want you to direct them. Send them a list that states — I expect you to . . . and then give them a list of your expectations. This will be very helpful to them and save you. My team members always know when I expect a job to be completed by and how much my budget or my client’s budget is.
You can see why hiring team members before your business gets too busy is a smart idea. Have them get to know you and before you know it, you’ll feel like they’re reading your mind!
First of all what exactly is outsourcing? Perhaps the simplest definition was given by Wiktionary, which says: The transfer of a business function to an external service provider.
These days, it seems unavoidable for companies to outsource a number of jobs. But is outsourcing a new concept? History will show that outsourcing has been around for many years. In fact, from 1750 to 1900, during the Industrial Revolution, there was a need to outsource jobs because of the high demand for the production of goods.
In the middle of the 20th century, with the invention of faster means of transportation, outsourcing became more common. Education and skill levels of workers have increased in developing countries thereby increasing outsourced job opportunities.
The 1990s brought on the IT revolution and this made it essential for big companies to outsource jobs. These included human resources, accounting and data processing. Today, most western companies outsource to eastern countries like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, the Philippines, etc.
So, why do companies outsource? Different companies have different reasons for outsourcing jobs. But these are the most common:
1. To reduce company costs
This is perhaps the most obvious reason why western companies outsource. There is a wage gap between industrialized and developing countries. Since the cost of living in third world countries is lower, it is reasonable that service providers from these countries will accept what is seen by Americans or Europeans as low paying jobs.
2. To put more focus on the companys core business
For example, an insurance companys main focus is its clientele. It is a customer-centered service. In order to be able to focus on its customer service, it will outsource its IT support. While most transactions utilize computers, the company can still concentrate on giving excellent service to the clients without having to worry about computer or technical breakdown.
3. Access to a larger talent pool
Outsourcing provides businesses with a larger talent pool. There have been a number of cases where western companies have discovered highly skilled computer programmers, engineers, web designers, etc. in other countries.
Some developing countries offer tax incentives to western companies to move their manufacturing operations in order to counter high corporate taxes in their own country.
5. To have more leisure time
Some businesses outsource work so that their employees can optimize their work-leisure balance.
These are the most common reasons why businesses outsource jobs. These reasons seem to bring out only positive things from outsourcing. But, hold on. Outsourcing also has its share of problems. That is why you have to weigh things before making a final decision whether you will outsource or not.
If you find that you’re sitting down at your computer and checking emails constantly or surfing Facebook with the majority of your day as a business owner and seem unable to focus or get things done that you know are important, it just may be time for you to outsource.
