Located at various locations around Newcastle, Koryu Uchinadi is a modern interpretation of Okinawa's historic fighting art and has an application based curriculum. Whilst there is large amount of hype about mixed martial arts, or (MMA), Koryu Uchinadi is the original mixed martial art. Defensive methods such as kicking, punching, strangulation, choking, joint locking, grappling, pressure point manipulation are practiced in Koryu Uchinadi.
A completely systematized method of learning/teaching for children and adults, delivered in a traditional atmosphere, honouring both the culture from which it comes and the master who pioneered its practice, Koryu Uchinadi is both an art and a science. Koryu Uchinadi is best explained as a functional and practical defence against the various “Habitual Acts of Physical Violence”.
Most karate schools are competition oriented and their training is geared towards that outcome. Koryu Uchinadi is based on functional and practical self defence techniques, unrestricted by rule bound competition. There are no referees on the street!
If you are frustrated by rule-bound practices, inflexible rituals and bored of the repetitive nature of the reverse punch point scoring arena? Koryu Uchinadi is an organisation that can teach you the original and more functional combative application practices in a rational, coherent and systematised manner.

Sensei Marc Mathews has been training and teaching martial arts for over 20 years and has obtained black belts in two styles of Karate. Sensei Marc has a 1st degree black belt in Shorinjiryu Karate, a sport based karate style and 3rd degree black belt in Koryu Uchinadi Karate, which is the style taught at his Dojo located at Valentine Public School. After many years competing in sport karate and reaching state and national levels, Sensei Marc gained a wealth of knowledge in developing effective and practical fighting combinations for rule bound competitions. In addition to the rule bound martial arena, Sensei Marc has gained extensive knowledge based self-defence applications, having worked as a security guard. Sensei Marc has successfully programmed and delivered large scale self-defence programs catering for up to 100 students at a time. To engage an audience of that size requires a polished and engaging program to ensure the message gets across easily and safely and so that students progress and get the most from their training. Sensei Marc has successfully gained this teaching experience from running many karate schools at Sydney’s most prestigious private schools such as Scott’s College, Newington Prep and Maris Brothers, just to name a few.
