Help Clean Up Charleston!! Communities, schools, businesses and other groups are invited to join the Adopt-A-Highway program to clean up Charleston County. Citizens from all over Charleston will engage in litter pickups. Volunteer your church, your office team, your soccer team or just yourself.

Civil War Reenactment of the Battle of Secessionville


The Battle of Secessionville was fought on James Island, near Charleston, South Carolina on June 16, 1862. This was the first major Federal effort to take Charleston. Every year at Boone Hall Plantation, there is an annual reenactment of the battle.

Stroll the cobbled streets and gas lit alley ways to discover the works of well over 500 artists representing a diverse variety of styles and mediums from traditional to contemporary. All galleries of the French Quarter will be open with artists on hand and refreshments.

Every year the James Island County Park lights up over 500,000 lights to provide you with an enchanting 3-mile driving tour. Fun for everyone - you can also tour Santa's Village, make a s'more by the marshmallow roasting pit, take a snap- shot with Santa, then hop aboard a train for an up-close look at the displays. To tour the lights in your car is $10/car.

H. L. Hunley - Historic Confederate Submarine

H.L. Hunley was a Confederate submersible that demonstrated the advantage and danger of undersea warfare. Although not this nation's first submarine, Hunley was the first submarine to engage and sink a warship. The Hunley is normally open for public tours every Saturday from 10 - 5 and Sunday from 12 - 5. For more information on tours call (877) 448-6539.

When on vacation in Charleston, Rainbow Row is a MUST TO SEE. Originally these mid-1700 homes had been the center of commerce; merchants had stores on the first floor and lived on the floors above. Today this beautiful array of homes is known as "Rainbow Row".

When on vacation in Charleston, the City Market is a must see. There are a total of four buildings spanning from Meeting Street to East Bay Street. An assortment of wares is sold by hundreds of vendors. Sweet grass basket weavers can be seen in every building, along with, local artists, jewelry, tapestry, souvenirs, church dolls,afghans, rugs, rice, beans and sauces, local candies and cookies and much more.

Recently this building has been opened to the public as a museum. The Old Slave Mart is the only known building used as a slave auction gallery in South Carolina.
