A visit to the gentle rolling hills of southern Pennsylvania isn't complete without a visit to Seven Valleys Vineyard and Winery. Tucked away on a quiet and serene hillside just outside Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania, Seven Valleys Vineyard and Winery is quickly gaining a reputation for producing award winning wine.
The Seven Valleys Vineyard and Winery started as just one of the many southern Pennsylvania farms tucked into the rolling countryside just a mile and a half from the heart of Shrewsbury. The house was hardly more than a shell, all that remained of the barn was the stone foundation. The Hunters then living in the Philadelphia area, planted their first five acres of grapevines in 1976, commuting on weekends to tend to their crop. That first harvest yielded about three tons of grapes. The size of the vineyard has grown over six-fold since then. However, it was not until 1994 that the winery was started. In the interim, the vineyard's grapes were harvested and sold to other local wineries.
In fact, it was not until 1990 that the couple, psychologists by profession, restored their centuries old farmhouse and became full-time local residents. The barn was rebuilt on its old foundation and became the site for the winery, which is flanked by a picturesque pond and overlooks rolling acres of grapevines. The winery's Tasting Room is used for public and private tasting parties and catered events.
Local residents can also find all the same fine wines in the Seven Valleys Wine Shop, not far away, amid the quaint shops of historic Shrewsbury's "Antique Row".
The southern Pennsylvania location is, indeed, perfect for the Hunters' wine business - not only because of the climate and growing conditions but also because of the local community's taste for these award-winning wines.
