Free internet games are a top popular entertainment. These games are free to play in some form without ever requiring a subscription or making payment. They can run on a non-profit basis, requiring no payment from the players; funded through advertising, either in-game or through pop-ups. One more genre of games which has an online basis is role games, usually involving a monthly fee for online play, typically having countless missions, unlimited character development, amongst other areas. You as a player have a ROLE in the game world. This role can be support, attacking, conquering, joining other players, etc. Usually there is no core story, players make up their own stories and come up with their own missions for game play. Games focusing on speed, physical drama and which set high demands on the player's reflexes and coordination skills are called action games. The player's only goal is to maximize their score by collecting objects and defeating enemies.

The development of web-based graphics technologies such as flash allowed browser games to become more complex. These free games, also known by their related technology as free flash games were recreated as games played using the flash plugin on a webpage, letting you put animation and movies on a website, using vector and raster graphics, a native scripting language. Most browser games have limited multiplayer play, often being single player games with a high score list shared among all players.
