The national faith-based community organizing group known as People Improving Communities through Organizing (PICO) is creating an interfaith network of congregation in Philadelphia. Pastor Hynicka is a member of the Sponsoring Committee and is providing leadership in putting the Philadelphia group together. The Philadelphia Sponsoring Committee has adopted the name POWER, an interfaith movement (Philadelphians Organized to Witness, Empower and Rebuild). The basic goal is to create a network of local organizing committees – one in each congregation – that identifies community issues and concerns, conducts research on those issues and concerns and designs an action to secure significant commitments to address those issues and concerns.
Local work is primary; however, with time, the local organizing committees will connect to address city-wide, state-wide and national issues. Success comes by getting hundreds and eventually thousands of like-minded people in a room with the people who have the authority to make change. The next city-wide assembly is set for Thursday, November 18, 2010 at 7pm. The place will be announced. From now until that assembly, over 200 people from more than 25 congreagtions are conducting a "Listening & Relational Outreach Campaign" in order to listen to the community concerns of their peers, both in the congregation and from the community-at-large. If you are interested in this effort and want to attend the next meeting, please contact Pastor Robin by telephone (215) 498 3718 or email robin@archsteetumc.org.
